"I'm not gonna just sit here. Everybody's just sitting here. Waiting for orders that aren't coming." Sergeant Miles Matheson, eight weeks after the Blackout.

The United States Marine Corps is a branch of the United States Armed Forces responsible for global power projections and amphibious assaults. Their operations are attached to the United States Navy. The Marines have two hundred thousand active troops with another forty thousand in reserve. They often serve as the spearhead for American missions overseas. The Marine Corps was founded in 1775 and have played critical roles in every conflict the United States has endured in over two hundred years.

Pre-Blackout

Not much is known about the status of the Marine Corps before the Blackout. It is possible that they had some knowledge of the impending apocalypse. Factors that support this theory include the quick response of the Marines in locking down their bases and using flares for lights, knowing that electrical lights would not work. Another factor is that Ben Matheson worked for the Department of Defense and most likely had their assistance in creating the Switch.

Blackout

When the Blackout occurred, much of the nation fell into chaos. The Marines however, stayed relatively organized. The troops stationed at the Recruit Depot in Parris Island, South Carolina quickly locked down the base. Sergeants Miles Matheson and Sebastian Monroe were stationed at Parris Island and were off-base during the time of the Blackout. They returned to find the base entrance heavily guarded and were required to show their IDs to the guards in order to enter. Monroe had misplaced his ID and had to display his signature tattoo to confirm his identity. During the Blackout, two CH-53D Sea Stallion helicopters lost control and crashed near the base.

Post Blackout

Two months after the Blackout, the Marine Corps remained inactive. Due to the loss of communications and breakdown of the chain of command, the Marines stayed on their bases instead of responding to the crisis. A fire seems to have occurred on Parris Island as one of the aircraft hangers was seen to have suffered fire damage. The soldiers were forced to adapt to life without modern technology. As time passed, some Marines began to grow restless. Eventually, 56 went AWOL, including Miles Matheson and Sebastian Monroe. An additional 20 died, with 6 being suicides.

Present

Equipment

Much of the Marine Corps's equipment has been made useless due to the Blackout. However, they could still utilize firearms such as the M4A1 carbine and the M9 pistol sidearm. The ACOG scopes on weapons would still work, as they use tritium isotopes and fiber optics for illumination. Several C-130 transport aircraft and UH-60 Blackhawk general purpose helicopters were seen on the ramp at Parris Island, but these did not work after the Blackout. After the collapse of the U.S. Government, the militias began to stockpile these weapons. Luckily, some of these weapons have been acquired by the Rebels, such as an M40 sniper rifle. Monroe is also working to stockpile weapons that require modern technology such as tanks, helicopters (from the U.S. Army), and aircraft. Coupled with his plan to acquire the Switch, he plans to use these weapons to conquer the other American republics and control the entire continent.

Bases

  • Recruit Depot in Parris Island.
